The image of the sage in this exhibit is the first Chabad Rebbe. Known as the Alter Rebbe, Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi. He has authored dozens of Chassidic masterpieces mostly known by the Tanya.

Famously known for being imprisoned for strengthening Judaism in the former Soviet Union.

He is the first in the line of 7 Chabad Rebbes.

Chief Rabbi of Yekaterinoslav (today Dnipro, Ukraine)

Arrested by the Soviet authorities for his courageous efforts to preserve and spread Judaism. He was exiled to Kazakhstan, where he continued serving the Jewish community with great self-sacrifice and later passed away.

Its purpose was to help Jewish travelers navigate safely around the United States. It included kosher restaurants synagogues and more. 

Jews lived in America for more than 2 centuries this book was one of many such guides that were helpful to them.
